Black Cohosh
FEMININE BALANCE – COOLING – TENSION & SPASM
Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) has an earthy, bitter and drying medicinal root that is native to North America. Traditionally used by the Cherokee and Iroquois for gynecological issues, spasm pain and coughs. Black Cohosh soothes tension, supports hormonal balance, and gently restores nervous system strength. A trusted ally for cramping, hot flushes, and emotional unrest related to hormonal changes for short term use.
Traditional uses:
Hormone Support - Supporting estrogen activity without containing estrogen in Menopause and perimenopause – reduces hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood swings.
Spasm & Inflammation - Muscle tension, heat and spasm – traditionally used to release tight muscles, reduce cramping, inflammation and soothe tension held in the neck, shoulders and female uterine pain.
Relaxant - Mood and nervous system – cooling and calming to the mind and body when anxiety, melancholy, or emotional fluctuation are linked to hormonal changes.
As a tincture … Conveniently taken in water - 10–20 ml per week or 1-3ml daily of a 1:2 Root 60% alcohol. Best used short term as required and in cycles of 3–6 weeks with breaks in between of 1-2 weeks.
Most like:
Dong Quai – both support hormone balance, though Black Cohosh is more specific for menopause heat and uterine cramping while Dong Quai is tonic to blood also.
Red Clover – helps low estrogen transition by mimicking estrogen benefits in Perimenopause and Menopause.
Chaste Tree – more regulating for the menstrual cycle and ovulation. Naturopaths often combine these for hormone balance with stress and tension.
Peony – Cooling and moist for stress support due to hormone change.
Caution:
Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Any Liver disease.
Use cautiously in hormone-sensitive conditions.
Avoid long-term dosing - our Naturopath will consult with you for guidance.
