Dandelion Root & Leaf
LIVER DETOX – KIDNEY CLEANSER – NOURISH & UPLIFT
Dandelion is the great whole-body tonic—cleansing, nourishing and restoring across all levels. From flower to root, it offers a complete spectrum of medicine: uplifting the spirit, feeding the tissues and clearing stagnation from the liver, kidneys and blood.
This is a herb of balance and generosity. Where there is congestion, heaviness or depletion, dandelion works to both clear and rebuild—supporting digestion, fluid movement and detoxification while replenishing minerals and vitality.
Indications:
Liver & gallbladder support – The root stimulates bile flow, clears congestion and supports detoxification where the liver is sluggish.
Kidney & fluid balance – The leaf acts as a gentle, potassium-sparing diuretic, supporting urinary health, oedema and fluid stagnation.
Digestive support – A classic bitter root that stimulates appetite, digestion and nutrient absorption.
Skin & inflammation – Supports inflammatory skin conditions through its cleansing and mild anti-inflammatory actions.
Blood sugar balance – Traditionally used to support metabolic health and regulate blood sugar.
Emotional & energetic support (flower) – Uplifting and gently moving to stuck emotions such as frustration, grief and stagnation.
Dosage:
Leaf tea…
1–2 teaspoons dried leaf per cup of hot water.
Steep 5–10 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups daily.
Root decoction…
1–2 teaspoons dried root per cup of water.
Simmer 15 minutes. Drink 1–3 cups daily.
Tincture…
Root Tincture: 3–7ml daily or 20 - 40 ml weekly (1:2 Root, 25% alcohol) - liver support
Leaf tincture: 1 - 6ml per day or 10-40ml per week (1:1 Leaf, 25% alcohol)
Most like:
Chicory (root & leaf) – Almost identical bitter tonic. Chicory is slightly stronger for digestion; dandelion root is broader as a liver–kidney tonic.
Burdock root – A deeper blood purifier. More focused on chronic skin and toxicity; dandelion root is gentler and more nutritive.
Yellow Dock – A liver stimulant with mild laxative action. More focused on elimination; dandelion root is more balanced and nourishing.
Nettle leaf – A mineral-rich kidney tonic. More building and nutritive; dandelion leaf adds stronger fluid movement.
Cleavers – A lymphatic and urinary herb. More focused on lymph flow; dandelion leaf & root bridges liver, kidney and digestion.
Gentian – A very strong bitter. More intensely digestive; dandelion root is milder and more suitable for long-term use.
Cautions:
Asteraceae sensitivity – Use cautiously in those with plant family allergies.
Gallstones – Use with care in cases of bile duct obstruction or severe gallstones.
Diuretic medications – May enhance effects when combined.
Blood sugar – Monitor in those on diabetic medications.
