IMMUNE DEFENDER – FEVER SUPPORT – RESPIRATORY CLEARING

Elder is the wise protector of the immune system—cooling, clearing and gently opening the body to release heat, infection and congestion. Where there is fever, inflammation or viral invasion, elder brings balance and resolution. Elder works at the interface of immunity, skin and lungs—supporting the body to sweat, clear and restore. Both the flowers and berries offer powerful yet gentle medicine - the berries being powerful antioxidants and the flowers being powerful anti-inflammatory.

Indications:

  • Cold & flu support – Encourages healthy fever response, reduces congestion and helps shorten the duration of viral infections.

  • Respiratory health – Supports bronchial conditions, coughs and sinus congestion. Helps clear heat and mucus from the lungs.

  • Immune modulation – Strengthens immune response while assisting the body to respond efficiently to viral exposure.

  • Sinus & inflammatory conditions – Cooling and anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce swelling, heat and irritation.

  • Skin healing – Traditionally used for rashes, wounds and eruptive conditions where heat needs to be released through the skin.

  • Urinary support – Mild diuretic action assisting fluid movement and gentle detoxification.

As a tea…
1–2 teaspoons dried herb per cup of boiling water.
Steep minutes. Drink up to 3 cups daily.

As a syrup (berries)…
1 tablespoon 1–3 times daily, especially during cold and flu season. (See our learning page the recipe.)

As Elderflower tincture…
Take 2 - 4ml daily (flowers). (1:2 Tincture, 25% alcohol)

Most like:

  • Echinacea – Both immune supportive. Elder is more antiviral and cooling, while echinacea is more stimulating and lymphatic.

  • Rosehip – Both nourish immunity. Rosehip is more tonic and vitamin-rich; elder is more acute and antiviral.

  • Mullein – Both support the lungs. Mullein soothes and moistens; elder clears heat and infection.

  • Licorice – Both assist respiratory conditions. Licorice is moistening and anti-inflammatory; elder is cooling and dispersing.

Cautions:

  • Raw berries – Unripe or uncooked berries can be toxic and may cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Always cook before use.

  • Autoimmune conditions – Use with care due to immune-stimulating effects.

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding – Consult a healthcare practitioner before use.
