Pau d'Arco
IMMUNE DEFENDER – ANTIMICROBIAL – DEEP CLEANSING BITTER
Pau d’Arco is a deep forest medicine—cooling, drying and powerfully cleansing to the blood and tissues. Drawn from the inner bark of a resilient rainforest tree, it carries the intelligence of protection, helping the body defend, clear and restore balance where infection and toxicity have taken hold.
This is a herb for clearing—working through the blood, gut and immune system to reduce microbial overgrowth, inflammation and stagnation. Where there is heat, infection or imbalance in the terrain, Pau d’Arco helps purify, regulate and strengthen the body’s natural defences.
Indications:
Immune support – Enhances the body’s ability to respond to infection and supports immune resilience.
Antifungal & antimicrobial – Particularly useful for fungal overgrowth (such as candida), as well as bacterial imbalances.
Anti-inflammatory – Assists in reducing inflammation in the joints, digestive tract and tissues.
Digestive health – Supports gut integrity in cases of dysbiosis, ulcers and inflammatory digestive conditions.
Detoxification support , Blood cleanser– Traditionally used to cleanse the blood and support liver function in clearing toxins.
Systemic imbalance – Used in deeper protocols where chronic infection or toxicity is present.
As a decoction…
1–2 teaspoons bark per cup of water. Simmer 10–15 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily.
As a tincture…
Take 3–7ml daily or 20-50ml per week (1:2 bark and stem tincture, 45% alcohol).
Most like:
Echinacea – Immune activating and infection-fighting. Echinacea is more acute and immune-stimulating; Pau d’Arco is deeper and more antimicrobial.
Goldenseal – A strong antimicrobial for mucous membranes. More specific to gut and respiratory linings; Pau d’Arco is broader and more antifungal.
Licorice – Supports immunity and inflammation. Licorice soothes and moistens; Pau d’Arco clears and dries.
Astragalus – A preventative immune tonic. Astragalus builds long-term resilience; Pau d’Arco is used more during active imbalance.
Turmeric – Anti-inflammatory and protective. Turmeric works systemically on inflammation; Pau d’Arco is more targeted to microbial imbalance.
Cautions:
Pregnancy & breastfeeding – Avoid use.
Blood thinning – May increase bleeding risk; use cautiously with anticoagulants.
High doses – May cause digestive upset such as nausea or diarrhoea.
Sensitivity – Rare allergic reactions may occur.
