MOOD – NERVES – LIGHT & RENEWAL

This bright yellow flowering herb carries the light of the summer sun into darker days. Warming, uplifting and soothing, St John’s Wort is your natural support for low mood, mild depression, nervous system recovery, and the emotional blues that linger through winter or times of transition.

A tonic for the spirit, heart and emotions, it promotes nerve regeneration, balances mood, and gently strengthens the whole nervous system.

Traditional uses:

  • Mood – Uplifts mild depression and emotional stagnation. Traditionally used for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), melancholy, anxiety and grief.

  • Nerves – Supports nerve healing and regeneration. Helpful for sciatica, neuralgia, nerve pain, and post-viral nerve fatigue.

  • Sleep – Calms the mind and encourages deeper rest without sedation. Great for stress-related insomnia or tension headaches.

  • Skin and wounds – Infused oil applied topically, St John’s Wort oil is a time-honored remedy for nerve pain, shingles pain, wounds, and inflammation.

As a tincture … Take 15–50 ml per week or 2 - 7ml per day (50% alcohol) in water or add to calming tea blends with lemon balm and passionflower.

As a tea … Steep 1–2 tsp dried herb in boiling water for 10–15 minutes. Best enjoyed daily over weeks to gently uplift mood and ease nerves.

As an infused oil… Add to your bath for a warm nervous system rejuvenation or create a balm or cream for skin conditions with 10% of this oil - it is super concentrated, so don’t use it unless diluted to 10%. Topically it brings blood to the skin to relieve nerve pain, soothes inflammation and allows regenerative healing to occur.

Most like:

  • Lemon balm – Also calms and uplifts the mood, but gentler and more cooling. St John’s Wort is warming and more potent for low mood.

  • Passionflower – Supports nervous tension and sleep, but more calming to anxiety. St John’s Wort works with mood and nerve regeneration and can have an uplifting effect.

  • Withania – Stress support and strengthening, often used alongside St John’s Wort for mood and stress resilience.

  • Chamomile – Calming and anti-inflammatory, especially in gut and nervous system. Pairs well in tea with St John’s Wort.

Caution:

  • Do not use with antidepressants (SSRIs), some contraceptive pills, or immunosuppressive medications. May affect how your body processes medications (CYP450 inducer). Check with your healthcare provider.

  • Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless under professional guidance.

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure – may increase photosensitivity reactions in some people.
